With the scorching heat, all over! The sun is turning brighter with each passing day, as the environmental temperature rises, our body starts experiencing the burden of heat. Overheating of the body is called Hyperthermia, a heat-related illness which occurs as a result of heat exposure.

What causes heat related illness?

Heat-related illness can strike anyone. But the alcoholics, young, elderly and the ones who have a weak immune system may be at a higher risk of catching Heat Related Illness.

Heat exhaustion, heat cramps, and heat stroke all occur when your body cannot cool itself properly. But each has a slight difference.

Heat exhaustion takes place when the body loses large amounts of water and salt through excessive sweating, particularly through physical work. The loss of essential salts from the body along with the much-needed water content can cause an issue like heat exhaustion. People running on low sodium are at higher risk!

Heat cramps can strike when the body loses excessive amounts of fluids and salt. This deficiency, along with the loss of other essential nutrients such as potassium and magnesium occurs during heavy exertion.

Heatstroke, the most serious of the heat-related illnesses, occurs when the body suffers from long, intense exposure to heat and loses its ability to cool itself. In extreme heat, the part of the brain that normally regulates body temperature starts malfunctions. This decreases the body’s ability to sweat and, therefore, cool down. People suffering from the diseases which stop the formation of sweat may be at a higher risk of getting affected from heatstroke.

What are the treatments for heat-related illnesses?

1. Heat rash

Treatment for heat rash includes :-

  • Move the person to a cooler, less humid environment.
  • Keep the affected area dry.
  • Try using unperfumed talcum powder to increase comfort.
  • Avoid using ointments or creams because they keep the skin warm and moist which can worsen the condition of the person.

2. Heat Cramps

Treatment for heat cramps includes :-

  • Stop activity and sit quietly in a cool place.
  • Increase fluid intake.
  • Rest a few hours before returning to activity.
  • Seek medical help if there is no improvement.

3. Dizziness and fainting

Treatment for dizziness or fainting includes :-

  • Get the person to a cool area and let them lay down to feel fresh.
  • If fully conscious, increase fluid intake.

4. Heat Exhaustion

Treatment for heat exhaustion includes :-

  • Lay the person down in a cool place.
  • Remove outer clothing.
  • Wet skin with cool water.
  • Increase fluid intake if they are fully conscious.
  • Talk to a medical practitioner.

5. Heatstroke

Heatstroke is a medical emergency and requires urgent attention :-

  • Get the person to a cool area and lay them down & call for emergency medical help.
  • Remove clothing and wet their skin with water, providing air by fanning continuously.
  • Do not give the person fluids to drink.
  • Lay the unconscious person by his side and clear his airway.
  • If medical attention is delayed, talk to a medical practitioner for further help.
