Smog is a mixture of air pollutants Nitrogen Oxide and Volatile organic compounds. It is a combination of smoke and fog! As it covers up the environment with a grey blanket, the poisonous air dissolves in the flora and fauna which is hazardous enough to make you suffer from the various respiratory diseases.
What Causes Smog?
Smog occurs due to multiple reasons, the most common cause is the auto-mobile exhaust, power plant and factory fumes and many consumer products used in daily life. In urban areas the maximum smog come from the motor vehicles. Smog is generally more severe in summers as bright sunlight also causes smog.
What are the effects of smog?
Smog, which is made of various air pollutants can prove hazardous for health. it can cause respiratory issues like Asthma, Chronic Bronchitis, Emphysema. Another effect of smog could be eye irritation and reduced resistance to cold and other lung infections. The ozone in the smog contributes in hampering the plant growth and destroying the crops.
How is smog formed?
The atmospheric pollutants or gases that form smog are released in the air when fuels are burnt. When sunlight and its heat react with these gases and fine particles in the atmosphere, smog is formed. It is purely caused by air pollution. Ground level ozone and fine particles are released in the air due to complex photochemical reactions between volatile organic compounds (VOC), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). These VOC, SO2 and NOx are called precursors.
What are the precautionary measures for smog?
Smog is not under the control of a single person, we, as a society should contribute in making the environment better and smog free. It is quite clear that the major reason for smog is the fumes coming from motor vehicles. We can lessen the usage of cars and other automobiles. Another possible option is keeping a check on the car maintenance, changing the oil and checking the tyre inflation etc. When going outside your house, try and use a mask covering your nose and mouth.
It always starts from a single effort! Try and be generous to save your environment.
